South African Military Vehicles in War Thunder
War Thunder is a highly realistic battle game where players can choose from a number of armoured vehicles, tanks, ships, helicopters and planes represented for different countries. The player chooses a country and vehicle type, and works their way up from tier 1, progressing to higher tier vehicles as they gain battle experience. The vehicles are incredibly detailed and have characteristics that are closely resemble their real-world counterparts. An exception is often the premium vehicles that can be bought as they can have some enhanced features e.g. slightly faster turret rotation speed than the real-world vehicle. But each online battle tries to match players and similar vehicle tiers to ensure good game play.
I mentioned briefly in the video about World of Tanks which is another very popular tank battle game. Whilst World of Tanks focuses more on a faster-paced arcade type game with numerous points needed before knocking out an enemy vehicle, War Thunder can eliminate an enemy tank with just a single shot if it is very well placed. War Thunder has larger maps, more vehicle types, and plays at a slightly slower pace.
What to me is very interesting is it is the only online game I'm aware of that has a variety of South African military vehicles in it including the Eland, Ratel, Rooikat, Olifant tank, and even the Rooivalk attack helicoptor. The Ratel, for example, is considered to be the very first true wheeled ICV (Infantry Combat Vehicle) top enter military service anywhere in the world, and for its time was one of the best ICVs anywhere. It is regarded by most military analysts as the grandfather of all subsequent ICV designs. The Ratel became the backbone of the then SADF (now SANDF) mechanised battalions and served with distinction during 12 of the 26 years of the South African Border War.
Note though what War Thunder shows as the G6/Eland, is actually the G6 Rhino Self-Propelled Howitzer-Vehicle with 155mm artillery gun. The real Eland is a 4-wheel drive armoured car with a 60mm or 90mm quick-firing gun.
As a matter of interest, I'm playing War Thunder in Steam Games on Manjaro KDE Linux.

    Hello Danie, thanks for explaning how to use LocalSend. I have one question if I may: do you happen to know how to select multiple photos when sending from an iPad. In my case I have Lets say 100 photos and in order to send them all, I have to select them individually and I don’t find a button to select them all. Thanks for your advise. Kind regards. Herman

      Always good to hear from another War Thunder player ;-) OK I'd try switching it's video capture between fullscreen, window and area. Window for example needs focus on the window itself but the other two modes may work better. I noticed on my PC if I click on anything else, War Thunder minimises. I actually used OBS Studio last time I did some captures for War Thunder.

    One thing I've found that it doesn't work if any of the device is connected to a guest network. Both of the device must be connected to a primary or non guest network to make any transfer. Or is it maybe cause my guest network doesn't have any password so it thinks it's not secure to make a transfer. There must be some kind of error message that explains what might be wrong. It took me a while to figure these. Edit: Few things yet I am not confirmed is that if it can transfer without any wifi plan thats active. Or any huge files. Or can it transfer through a network created by a mobile hotspot, etc.

    • @GadgeteerZA
      @GadgeteerZA 23 дні тому

      No it won't know about passwords, but both devices do need to be on the same LAN or accessible between local networks. So if your guest network is isolated and only has Internet access (no visibility) of other devices on local network) then it won't be able to establish a local connection. Same goes for a mobile hotspot - those connect out to the Internet only. LocalSend keeps things local for better security. If a device connects to the local WiFi on your router, it should see other devices on your network fine. Guest networks can be setup often to see other devices, but not everyone wants that active.

      OK all your settings sound right. The only way to see is if people have publish to map on then they'll appear at meshmap.net/ if they have a location set as well. Right now I'm not seeing anyone but the thing is to leave one of your nodes on so that others may see you. You'll also see them appear in your nodes list if at any time they are seen by your radio. You could also try going to any location that has a view over the city, and run your radio from there for 15 to 20 mins and see if you see any others.

      @GadgeteerZA Місяць тому

      Sorry I see now your comment got held for review (no idea why). But we did get in contact. Yes definitely a high site though if possible, as it really gets all nodes in contact with each other. For example in Cape Town we have one node higher up (can't say exactly where yet as paperwork must be approved) and it connected me (on Cape Flats) to a node in Stellenbosch 32 km away. Other thing in the beginning is to maybe increase max hops to 5 or 7 so that you can reach further through some nodes until you have a few in the area and then drop it again. But I have one node above my roof and one in the house so that already uses one additional hop. I did also describe my home setup in my webpage at gadgeteer.co.za/hamradio/meshtastic-in-south-africa/ as well as some sources. The ham radio guys have been quite keen to get involved so it may be worth trying to get in contact with one or two in the area. You can reach them at www.parc.org.za/ and maybe ask they announce something about Meshtastic to their members. I wrote an article in the Radio ZS magazine for hams in the May 2024 edition about Meshtastic. We try to also at least have the MQTT uplink enabled for Channel 0 the LongFast channel, so that locations are advertised at meshmap.net/ for others to see where the nodes are.

I love Memories actually and especially the way it sits (and accepts) the photos inside of Nextcloud, but the commenting system is horribly clunky as it uses Nextcloud's file comments. I've honestly not made my mind up yet (and had some issues again with Piwigo's 3rd party modules being outdated and had to disable some of them). Memories looked really promising as it uses the existing photo structure in Nextcloud with virtual albums overlaid above that, but the commenting is really clunky as it uses the underlying Nextcloud file commenting. It was the next closest to Immich's look and feel otherwise. So, I'm really going to have to review all my videos again to get a better feeling across all of them.

    Hello, what's the point of immich, I don't understand much, the BACKUP of the photos with the Android APP on the cell phone are saved on the server, in my case I use IMMICH with Unraid, but when I enter the Immich WebUI, the photos are not seen from the cell phone, from what I see they are saved in some folder, but they cannot be seen as they are on the cell phone, so how could the cell phone photos be seen in the IMMICH WebUI? Another thing, how can you recover those cell phone photos that are on the server as BACKUP to the cell phone back in case they are lost on the cell phone? Thanks!

    • @GadgeteerZA
      @GadgeteerZA Місяць тому

      Yes it's more a backup to self-host and view/share your photos outside of the Big Tech hosting environments. That auto-backup is more an auto-upload, as it does not actually restore as a function. The photos get sorted into albums, and you can also upload from desktop into Immich hosting etc. If you wanted to "restore" a few photos, you'd download them from Immich to your phone from inside the app. What is seen in the Immich app UI is the photos on the hosted side, not the phone. Personally I use Syncthing to sync all my phone photos/videos to my desktop, and every few days I delete them from the phone.

      Yes, not sure of the exact model but it has the voice activation too: Additionally, in Cape Town, South Africa, several Modulator sirens are installed which use their standard wail tone to alert citizens in the Melkbosstrand, Duynefontein, Blaauwberg, Table View, Robben Island, Atlantis, Philadelphia and Parklands areas in case of any emergency which can occur at the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station.] These Modulators are tested for about an hour annually on the first Wednesday of March during a so-called "Full Volume Siren Test" using a preset female voice (which reads "This is only a test; there is no need to take any action. This is only a test; there is no need to take any action. I repeat: this is only a test; there is no need to take any action. Listen to Good Hope FM or Kfm for further information") and live voice announcements (which are read by people and are often cite similar things said by the preset voice), other than the typical wail tone of the Modulator.

    On the Range Test page there is an image of a Google related tool used to help find the long distance ranges, that has an option to check for a Flat (I have to do this for censorship) Earth. Now why do you suppose they would do that if Flat (I have to do this for censorship) Earth was not a possibility? I don't see other shapes like a cylinder which is what the Mercator projection is based on. This idea of a Flat (I have to do this for censorship) Earth being given equal consideration in the tool must be pretty important.

    • @GadgeteerZA
      @GadgeteerZA 2 місяці тому

      OK not sure as my range test page in settings only has options to enable it, interval, and save in .CSV format. I'm on latest Beta so maybe you're on Alpha version? Radio frequencies tho do depend on Earth curvature as high frequencies are only straight line of sight vs lower frequencies (not Meshtastic frequencies) which are HF and can follow the curvature of the Earth by bouncing off the ionosphere. So as far as Meshtastic goes - it really only works in straight lines, unless you can reach a far mountain peak with a node on top, and then relay to nodes far on the other side. But even for 100km that is still pretty flat ground.

    • @DivergentDroid
      @DivergentDroid 2 місяці тому

      @@GadgeteerZA The claim "HF and can follow the curvature of the Earth by bouncing off the ionosphere." is in interesting one in that 1st, it commits the logical fallacy of begging the question Earth is a sphere and 2, There are no known experiments in physics to validate the claim of anything bouncing off of a layer of gas in an open system where that gas fails to obey the 2nd law of thermodynamics and expand into the available volume of lower pressure. I'm a shortwave guy not a ham but I have seen hams make such claims without scientific validation. Fun fact you can look up - The idea of an ionosphere was not created (it was not discovered) until after Marconi's radio test between England and New York. It was said by the mainstream scientists of the day it would never work due to Earth being spherical. Poof, it worked. Suddenly the radio buffs needed a reason why it worked in keeping with their heliocentric belief. Thus, the Ionosphere was born.

    • @GadgeteerZA
      @GadgeteerZA 2 місяці тому

      @@DivergentDroid the ionosphere did not just appear then, it was really only discovered after radio waves were invented and could be experimented with, and it was observed how waves that travel in straight lines only, could sometimes bounce long distances. I am a radio ham so had to study all the theory of radio propagation at different frequencies as well as power and bandwidth levels. A lot of what radio hams do is experimenting with radio, so we have radio beacons, and low power signals that are sent out 24/7 and we monitor when and when they are received elsewhere on Earth. Each frequency band ha sits own characteristics in how it propagates,a nd it is quite fascinating. That experimenting also includes bouncing VHF signals (line of sight) off the moon when it is present, to reach further to locatiosn you cannot see ove rthe horison (no moon, no reach). So hence why we are interested in Meshtastic as it is straight line of sight only, but it's relay capability let's it get around all sorts of objects.

      I think you are taking us way off the topic here, and I'm not making any claims. The video is about Meshtastic line of sight radio - it only connects to what it can see in a straight line (I never claimed anything else for this radio). You asked about the Range Test page - was that the one in the Meshtastic mobile app config settings labelled Range Test? As I said, my app's config page only shows the three settings I mentioned, and no link to anything external. The Range Test is intended to generate signals on one radio, with the other one receiving them whilst in Range Test mode. Those can be saved to a CSV file and imported into a spreadsheet to analyse. I haven't used it myself yet, but the idea is to walk around a neighbourhood, doing this test, and then seeing what the signal strengths look like at say 100m, 500, 800m etc to see where the signal works or not.

    • @GadgeteerZA
      @GadgeteerZA 2 місяці тому

      Thanks!!! Yes two ways: 1. Obviously, just adding tags in metadata and filtering on that. 2. But you mean for People View: Click on that Person with question mark icon at top right when in People View. It will highlight some faces with a green square in photos there. Select just those photos with the same face you want to ID. Then click on the icon top right that has small arrow to right saying Move to Person. If a person is not already present, then click on + to add them, and move. But that is only for faces it recognises as faces. You can't manually draw around a face and add it like Piwwigo does. You can maybe tweak the face recognition parameters under settings though to force it to recognise more faces, maybe.

    • @GadgeteerZA
      @GadgeteerZA 2 місяці тому

      Not also its recognition runs in batch jobs so object, face, etc recognition may take a while after uploads are done. Under Nextcloud Admin Settings / Recognise, you can see if face recognition has photos in the queue still.

    Great video! Do you recommend meshtastic for massive industrial IoT usecases like smart metering where you need a couple thousand meters on the same mesh network?

    • @GadgeteerZA
      @GadgeteerZA 2 місяці тому

      Thank you. Mmm not sure about a few thousand, but put it this way, you can tweak how often each transmits so typically you reduce that a bit, and you can set an encrypted channel so no-one else is reading the data. The devices transmit incredibly quickly - quick short bursts. The other thing is by default they will each relay signals onwards, but Meshtastic does choose the most direct route. But again you can set a few to relay, and the rest not. So some thought and tweaking is just required. It depends on how far away they are versus concentrated in a smaller space. But you can reach those who will know more at meshtastic.org/ in the Discord or Reddit servers. I'm sure many have actually done something like this.

      I'm not too sure of exactly what your situation looks like but remember there is a difference between Memories albums where you have to "link" photos to them in Memories or during an upload, versus Nextcloud shared folders. For the latter, Memories will have to read those photos in if it has access to those folders i the path. That happens automatically as the photos are in NC shared folders. Only thing for that is to maybe change the root folder in Memories, or else move your NC folders. But if neither Photos or Memories is doing what you expect, the problem is maybe not with them, but at the NC folder level.

      Not directly as far as I know but a few ideas are: 1. Immich has a feature request open at github.com/immich-app/immich/discussions/6090 2. Memories does not either, but underlying Nextcloud does connect to S3, so that connection may be seen as a "local" connect (not sure). 3. Piwigo may have a plugin called S3Upload that may do something like this. 4. There may be ways to get Docker to create a virtual sync to S3 i.e. so photos app sees it as a locally mapped volume, with something like this at github.com/efrecon/docker-s3fs-client.
